This is a small, slim book. This is my idea of an airport book. You can read for a few minutes, be distracted, resume reading, and never miss a thing. It's for people who have short attention spans and like to look at pictures.
The book is gorgeous. The pictures and fonts make for a beautiful layout. However, the grammar is so atrocious that I had to wonder if the writers were ever taught that one is NOT supposed to write dangling modifiers. Why would anyone write "canons" for "cannons"? (p. 68) Why would anyone think that the seventeenth century equals the 1700s? (p. 121) The authors seem to have no idea how to use commas, colons, and semicolons correctly.
As far as the material, the little chapters stress the lurid and trashy episodes of the lives of these royals. Some are overly familiar (Vlad the Impaler, Henry VIII, Catherine the Great, Mad King Ludwig). The little section on Marie Antoinette seems to omit all the important things in her life and stress the trivia. Other royals will probably be new to you. How many times can you say that someone is from the Hapsburg family and is thus inbred and sickly? These authors do it.
I did enjoy learning about a few minor royals I had never heard of before, but that didn't make up for all the errors.
I haven't written reviews here for years and I do not like writing negative reviews at all, but frankly this is one of the worst books or the worst I've read in my life in terms of grammar, style, inaccuracy, lack of sources, etcetera and I think unknowing buyers who like history must be warned, because the book has a handsome appearance.
I'm fond of history, especially concerning Royals of European countries and this book is even more inaccurate than any historical novel, which obviously being a novel takes liberties with reality. The writing style is repetitive. The authors attribute a number of facts to many of the Royals profiled which are not real. Everything is simplified. All these Royals seem one-dimentional characters. There are obvious mistakes. For example in Philip V of Spain's profile, Louis I, one of his sons by his first wife Queen Marie Louise, is discussed. Afterwards, in Ferdinand VI's profile, the authors state that he was the only son of King Philip V of Spain and his first wife! Unbelievable.
Some of the pictures or paintings included in the profiles are not of the Royals profiled.
All in all, a shame. Buyer beware! I bought this book as sale item (no wonder) at Barnes & Noble, and I think the 8 dollars I paid for it was too much. I think it's going to be the first time in my life I'm going to throw a book to the garbage or to the fireplace. What a waste of time!
I loved Michael Farquhar's "Treasury of Royal Scandals," A Treasury of Royal Scandals The Shocking True Stories History's Wickedest, Weirdest, Most Wanton Kings, Queens, Tsars, Popes, and Emperorsso I figured that "Mad Kings & Queens History's Most Famous Raving Royals" would also be an interesting read. It wasn't. There was barely any information on each of the nobles, and some weren't actually insane, just 'eccentric.' There are many factual errors in the book- dates, illustrations with no description, and as mentioned earlier, the labeling of "insane" where behavior was simply just out of place for its time period (and not actually mental instability). This is really unfortunate for people who are not history buffs and won't realize the extent of misinformation in this book.
There was obviously no editor on this book. The book is rife with run-on sentences (there is such thing as a comma!), more advanced vocabulary is often misused, pronoun usage is terrible and confusing. I'm not sure how this got published, as these mistakes are usually unacceptable even at a high-school level.
In short, a book of such low quality it should be removed from bookshelves and circulation.
This book appears to be fascinating but really offers little to no real information about the 40 monarchs it presents. Much of their "insanity" (and some of it is questionable) is backed up with no evidence and few examples, probably just enough to whet one's appetite to go searching for more info. As well, some information is incorrect Catherine the Great of Russia is listed as insane when she was one of the most forward-thinking monarchs of her time. True, she was very sexually active - and that seems to be a mark of insanity for these authors - but not insane, while her husband, Peter, who really WAS insane, is nowhere to be found in the book. Also, there are misprinted dates which make comparisons between reining periods difficult. I DO NOT recommend this book; instead, look at the table of contents and find other books with more substantial information about those listed.
I really enjoyed this quick and easy read. It gave brief profiles on each person and described why they were a little or a lot crazy. Fun, quick read. I was satisfied.
