Strength a mother journal edition by Ginger Zenor Children eBooks
I became aware of this little gem through my veterinarian, whose brother is married to the author.Page one begins with: “My name is Ginger Zenor. I am an unremarkable woman leading an unremarkable life. This is my story.” And what a story it is. Covering approximately one year (2008-2009), this nonfiction novella reveals the heartache, the struggles, the pain, as well as the courage, the strength, and the gratitude of a family in Iowa as 13-year-old Walt is diagnosed and treated for a highly aggressive malignant tumor (alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma) of his left hand. We receive the story entirely from the perspective of Ginger, mother of Walt. She writes in the form of entries from her personal journal. The writing is simple, but what she tells us is powerful and very emotive in her own quiet way.
Young Walt shows a boatload of mettle and fortitude during this most difficult period in his life. So do his parents, Ginger and Mark. We get the nitty gritty details of his treatment course, consisting of 8 weeks of radiation and 42 weekly doses of chemotherapy. We sweat along with Ginger and Mark as they and Walt await results of his multitude of blood tests, urine tests, x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and doctor opinions during the course of the year. We feel for Walt when he can’t stop vomiting or he is dragged back to the hospital time and again not only for his treatments, but for his myriad of treatment complications.
Walt just wants to be normal. His parents work hard to help him feel that way. Not only that, but the town of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, rallies around the family and makes the worst year of their lives one of the very best as well. If every kid had parents like Ginger and Mark and a support network like the people of Cedar Rapids, the strength required to recover from such a devastating illness would in a way be so much easier to summon.
This novella is so moving and so inspiring. In the world we live in today, stories like this give us faith that there are still good people out there looking to make some sort of positive difference in the lives of others. Thank you for sharing your story, Ginger. I found it very heartening.
P.S. Through my connection with my awesome vet, I know that Walt today is a student at Iowa State University and doing very well.

Strength a mother journal edition by Ginger Zenor Children eBooks Reviews
Knowing this family personally made this book even better. It was written honestly and accounts for all of the feelings, events, etc that a family endures during a year of chemo treatments.
Ginger's detailed account of a tumultuous year as her son battled cancer was heartfelt and inspiring. I wept at the pain the family endured and cheered for their victories, big and small. This is a great read! CONGRATULATIONS TO WALT & THE ZENOR FAMILY FOR ALL THEY HAVE OVERCOME!
